But perhaps the most important factor is that for more demanding uses, such as creating a moderately complex document, the original iPad proved to be a disappointment. As I attempted to explain in The iPad Is a Tease (April 2014)…

That has been my observation for even Windows’ Surface. I have a sister and cousin who both use Surface as replacements for their main computer/laptop. However, in order to do so, they have to provide an external hard drive so they can have the amount of memory needed for their lines of business. (One’s a dancer who has her own studio, the other works for an insurance company in their medicare fraud division. Both require moderate computers for their work.)

But I think there’s another factor. We’re living in a time where the smartphones have dethroned the computer and tablet for nearly everything. I spend more time on my iPhone than I do on my iMac, and I even cancelled a few computer only subscriptions because it couldn’t operate on my iPhone.

You may let your grandchildren play with your tablet, but I bet they’re already spending more time on their iPhones than the iPad because of the iPhone near-perfection in convenience and portability.
