In Goa, India, A Hotel is made entirely out of Shipping Containers and salvaged materials
BAGA BEACH, GOA, INDIA — Part I
In September 2017, The Box Hotels franchise launched their first location known as The Beach Box Hotel in Baga — a lively sea-side locale with Goa’s most recognized restaurants and nightlife. Despite its proximity to this bustling neighborhood, the hotel sits on the quiet end of a bridge that stretches between Baga’s crowded streets and surprisingly quaint corners.
The Box Hotels implement a ‘no-waste’, process of production in which most of the up-cycled features are designed and constructed in-house or on-site. While some hotel chains recognized for sustainability measures include reused materials in 30% of their construction, The Box Hotels employ as much as 72% — leaving a carbon footprint that is less than half the industry record.
The charm of this secluded road matches the hotel’s unconventional beauty. Shipping containers, from which the hotel gets its name, are a signature, multi-purpose feature. Painted cardinal red and overlaid with original artwork, these metal vessels are converted into 15 bedrooms, an in-ground swimming pool, bar, and upper-deck restaurant.
Our chairs are constructed out of reclaimed metal and truck tires salvaged from regional auto yards. We flay the rubber into quarters then process and paint them to canvas the chairs. Our creative team and fabricators can transform roughly twelve tires into a dozen repurposed chairs in a single day.
The bicycle symbolizes a time when these manual locomotives facilitated an entire economy of food delivery channels. Rudimentary bikes once carried metal containers of milk, bread, and tiffins or pre-ordered home-cooked lunches to residences and offices across India. Even today, Goan homes purchase traditional home-baked slices of bread and fish from tarp-covered woven baskets strapped to the back of bicycles. This outmoded bicycle was reclaimed from an auto yard and restructured an in-house team to fit our wall.
Dismantled components of a bicycle, including gears, handles, and wheels, are rearranged into abstract, geometric patterns to form a safety fence along the railing.
We salvage the bicycles from yards and garages. Then, we commission an in-house team to artfully deconstruct it while preserving individual parts. The assortment is then refinished and welded into a unique visual print.
The Box Hotels salvage and redesign scrap components to compose everything from a property’s mainframe architecture to its most minute decorative details. This chain of high-quality living spaces promotes an uncompromising brand of stylish, sustainable and affordable tourism in India.
