Small Business Marketing: Breaking Ground — Online

You have a small business and want to attract new customers. What to do? Here are some tips to get you off the ground.

1. Website — Have one? Good. Don’t? Get one. You can either hire a company to do a custom design or use a service like wix.com or squarespace.com to create a site using their template designer.

**It’s important that if you hire a designer, make sure you have your own web hosting. If your designer hosts your website on their personal server or through a reseller service, then you will not have access to your files — don’t let this happen. Always be in control of your files or else you risk losing them.

2. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) — You have the website; now you need to be found on search engine results. This is where SEO comes into play. If your website coding isn’t optimized for search engines, then you’re missing out. Having your code optimized will increase your visibility on search engine queries.

Here’s an example of a non-optimized website

Page Title: Your Brand | Home

Here’s an example of an optimized website

Page Title: Burgers, Sandwiches, Smoothies | East Village NY

If someone is searching for a good burger place in NY and your site isn’t optimized, you won’t come up in the search results. The only way you will be found is if they type in the name of your business. If your site is optimized, then if the person searches for “burger place east village” or “good burger in ny”, the search engine will grab the data in your coding and will display your website in the results — hopefully on the 1st Page!

So be sure to have your website code optimized as it’s an essential component of search engine optimization.

3. Social Media

Have you heard of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram? Yes? Very good. Do you have accounts set up? Yes? Good also. Are these pages sitting dormant, never updated? Not good at all. It is important to have these pages updated on a regular basis. Activity creates Visibility! More visible means more people are in tune with your brand.

A good plan to follow that is popular amongst social media experts is 80/20 (80% of posts are informative; 20% are promotional) What does this mean? It means that most of your tweets and Facebook posts should be geared towards engaging with other followers, not continuously promoting your brand.

Tip: Create a tweet or Facebook post that promotes your brand (selling point) and pin it. This way it’s always at the top of your Twitter and Facebook page when a user visits your profile.

If you got that down pat, then you’re good. If you don’t know how to do social media or just don’t have the time to do it, then that’s where we come in :) Send us an email — info@modernimprint.com — and we can set up a plan that will have you covered monthly.
