Serving is one of the most important elements of tennis. It’s the way that every point begins, and it sets the tone for the rally. That said, beginners often make some common mistakes in their service game. One of the most common involves the ball toss.

The ball toss portion of the serve is key. Toss the ball too low and the swing is jammed, losing power. Toss it too high and the timing of the serve can be completely thrown out of whack. To help find the optimal contact point, stand on the baseline and point the racket straight up. This is the point where the racket’s sweet spot should make contact with the ball. Don’t toss the ball too much higher or lower than this.

It’s also important to be cognizant of your balance during the toss. If you shift your weight forward too early, you lose power on the serve. Wait until it’s time to swing through the ball to shift your weight forward.
