Art Pills — Art history my way!
Giuseppe Sanmartino
Veiled Christ
Marble
We are used to extolling the works of Bernini and Canova who, through their artistry, managed to bring to life the blocks of marble they carved.
Does this work seem less sensational to you? I DON’T BELIEVE.
So many legends have arisen around the “Christ” veil including the one that saw Prince Raimondo di Sangro, alchemist and Freemason, as the inventor of a magic potion capable of marbling the veil…just legends!!!
The veil and the splendid naturalistic effect are just the fruit of the hands of a great Neapolitan master.
If you are in the area, Piazza San Domenico Maggiore, stop by and visit the Sansevero Chapel.
Here, in addition to the masterpiece I have briefly outlined, you can appreciate many other works such as the “Veiled Modesty” or “Disillusionment” that deserve to be admired up close.
Have I intrigued you?
If you have any questions, curiosity or need info for the visit please ask.
Until the next art pill 👋
