Global Movements- You CAN Make a Difference.

The Twenty First Century has taken an enormous leap towards a more collaborative and innovative society. Within the last decade alone we have seen some of the biggest technological advancements- and from here they are containing to expand, re-transform and share. And one thing is for sure, it won’t be slowing down anytime soon. According to author and New York University professor Clay Shirkey global networks have brought more abundance to the world economy, and new levels of collaboration enabled by digital media would lead to the end of the age of scarcity.

We now live in a world where millions of people can connect to each other with just the touch of a button. Social media forums such as facebook, twitter and chat room allow people to communicate 24/7 from anywhere around the world. Suddenly the world seems such smaller place. A sphere as big as this allows for anyone to express their voice to a vast audience.

Author and socialist Clay Shirky argue that social media enables for mass innovation and collaboration, beneficial for society and the economy. Whereas opposing is Thomas Piketty suggest thing that capitalism is failing us and that wealth inequality will continue to rise regardless of any technical advancements under the capitalist system.

As I personally engage in a range of social media forums and study the effects and outcomes of the media I can confidently say that we have gained so much from the media that if we were to go back and live without it, we couldn’t and we wouldn’t. The opportunities and advancements we have seen in the last decade are breathtaking and makes the future exciting. The use of social media has gained knowledge an insight into the plethora of issues and movements among the world, it opens up people’s hearts and minds to things that they weren’t even aware of. That’s one of my favourite things about the expansion of the media- it allows people to make a difference where they though they never could.
