Storytelling with Port numbers.

Well, here goes nothing. Let's see if we can try and memorize port numbers in a unique way. I am going to attempt to break down the following common networking protocols into 1. What they are and what they do. 2. Are they secure, and have they been replaced? 3. How can you memorize this by creating a story?

FTP 20,21/TCP

  1. The File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a standard network protocol used to transfer computer files between a client and server on a computer network. Port 20 is used to send data, and port 21 is used to send commands.
  2. File Transfer is a clear text protocol that sends data in the clear. FTP is often secured with SSL/TLS (FTPS port 990). SSH File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) can be used but is technology different.
  3. I look at the clock. There’s 30 minutes until I can leave work. I am 20 turning 21 at midnight, and I will be out partying, but I see my boss coming. Great, he just realized that he forgot to have me deliver the files the client sent over to all of our managers. There is a lot personal information I see just glancing at this paperwork. I wonder why these files and client information aren’t private or secured in an envelope or something.

SSH 22/TCP

  1. Secure Shell (SSH) is typically used to log into a remote machine and execute commands. It can also be used to securely tunnel other protocols inside SSH over a network, and uses public-key cryptography to authenticate.
  2. SSH was designed as a replacement for TELNET which by default does not encrypt anything. SSHv2 uses encryption to provide confidentiality and integrity of data and login information over a network.
Secure Shell

I was walking along the beach with my friend HoneyBoo22, and I found a big beautiful magic shell. I pick it up and realize the word Secure Shell Version 2 is carved in tiny print in perfect lines all over the shell. When opened the shell thousands of random letters and numbers and symbols lined the inside of the shell like an encrypted message. Honeyboo22 then put all of my things inside this shell, and the shell became a tunnel floating midair. My things flowed through the tunnel and became encrypted none of it made any sense.
