June 4th: Schism — Tool

For a song without a chorus, Schism was (is?) intensely popular. While it’s certainly not my favourite song on Lateralus (that would be The Patient (if you were wondering)), it’s one of the most recognized Tool songs (riffs) around. I’ve always struggled with the verses(?) of Schism, because I feel like there isn’t a whole lot of lyrical progression (of course, that’s probably part of the point), which makes it difficult to remember what order they come in.

I feel like I’ve been saying this a lot lately, but the bridge to this song is just so good. It’s so good. The bass line under ‘Cold silence has…’ is one of the best around. My absolutely favourite thing about the Lustmord remix was how expanded the bridge got, and how prominently that bass line was featured. It’s a really long remix, but probably worth checking out just for that moment.

At the end of the day, the song’s about communication. How important it is in all kinds of relationships, and how they’ll fall apart without it. Pretty good point.

I’ve done the math enough to know the dangers of our second guessing.
