The Braiders of Harlem
Christiana A Mbakwe

I found your article on OkayAfrica, while googling for a shop to patronize this weekend. What a great piece. To be honest and own up to my own insensitivity, my sole concern when negotiating with the hair braiders tends to be getting a good bargain. As an immigrant myself, I’ve never really thought deeply about the tendency to balk at the price difference between the cost of braids here and back home (in Nigeria), even knowing full well that the costs of living are incomparable. Anyway, I just had to find your original post and say thanks for writing about a community that is so often overlooked. I’ll aim to be more sensitive in my patronage moving forward.
