Maia, our Dryad (woodland nymph) creature, and the project’s concept character, reveals to us her past of abuse and hurt. She is tied to her woodland home, though it is also a place where her past hurt and abuse took place, she must find her strength and comfort, and self-love through expression. The project tells her story of sexual abuse received from a trusted family friend, “Charlie,” and the healing journey she begins after her abuse. Eventually, she finds her inner light, growth after tribulation, from survival to thrival, from darkness to light, all the while embracing the complicated facets of her healing journey. The project tells Maia’s story through music, poetry, & visual art.
A dryad is a tree nymph, or tree spirit, in Greek mythology. They were normally considered to be very shy creatures, except around the goddess Artemis, who was known to be a friend to most nymphs.
Nymphs are personifications of the creative and fostering activities of nature, most often identified with the life-giving outflow of springs.
Nymphs tended to frequent areas distant from humans, but could be encountered by travelers outside the village, where their music might be heard, and the traveler could spy on their dancing or bathing in a stream or pool. They might appear in a whirlwind. Such encounters could be dangerous, bringing dumbness, besotted infatuation, madness or stroke to the unfortunate human. When parents believed their child to be nereid-struck, they would pray to Saint Artemidos.
In the #GrowthProject, Maia is named after one of the 7 sisters: the Pleiades, companions of the Goddess Artemis. She was the Hellenic goddess of the hunt, wild animals, wilderness, childbirth, virginity and protector of young girls, bringing and relieving disease in women; she often was depicted as a huntress carrying a bow and arrows. The deer and the cypress were sacred to her.
Maia reveals her journey, where she reclaims her confidence, finds healing through embracing her sensuality without fear, with expression that is honest and emotional, heart-wrenching, and tender.
Shining light on past secrets, the darker corners of her journey, previously swept under the rug: sexual abuse and addiction, & utter self-destruction, she makes the journey into seeing her own light.
