Go One Step Further

If you overcome your limiting self beliefs, you are going to feel uncomfortable.

Why not go one step further?

I used to be very insecure up to 4 years ago. I was angry and resentful of the success of others. It stemmed from insecurity about my level of success. It was irrational. I had built a successful agency from scratch. Even still, I felt like I wasn’t doing enough. I was moving too slow.

Part of it came from a personal circumstance, a relationship that turned into a prison. It kept me tethered to an old mindset. When I ended that relationship I was able to become much more myself and much more secure.

I’m telling you this because, no matter what limiting beliefs you have, they all stem from one place — insecurity. When we crush those beliefs and become freer, that deep-seated insecurity will come to the surface. It’s going to hurt. But the great thing is the hurt (or the discomfort) doesn’t keep increasing when you go even further.

If you get to the point where you’re willing to change a little bit, you’re already willing to change a lot. This is how you turn a small improvement into a massive life-change.

I talk more about this in podcast episode 460 of The 7 Minute Mentor.

You Only Get Wet Once

Do you know that feeling when you’re caught in hard rain and you’re freaking out, hunching over, trying to stop it from seeping into your clothes? But then it does. You’re soaked through. What happens then?

You relax.

You can’t get any wetter. You’re already soaked through. You stand up straighter and stop freaking out. You think, “I’m already a drowned rat. Why not just embrace it, catch some raindrops on my tongue, and go wherever I’m going with a spring in my step and a funny little story to tell?”

The same thing can happen when you’re defeating your old limiting self beliefs.

Let’s say you’re unfit and you decide to fix yourself in this area by setting the goal of running a 5K race. Why not make it a marathon? The difference between 0 and 1 is far greater than the difference between 1 and 10… I don’t care what any mathematician might tell you.

You can only get wet once.

Why don’t we go one step further?

Rather than aiming to earn a £100K salary, why not aim for £300K? Even if you don’t hit your goal and you make a “measly” £150K, you’re 50K better off than you would have been if you aimed for your “reasonable” goal and succeeded!

Unless we set goals so audacious that most people won’t believe them, we’re not going to achieve anything truly worthwhile.

If we’re going to give 110% anyway (which is what people like you and I tend to do) why not aim higher? We are already going to be uncomfortable overcoming our insecurities, so why not see how far we can go?

People assume my goal is to build a multi 6-figure “monthly recurring revenue” business,

They’re wrong. I want to build a $500 million startup. On the journey to that goal, I need to focus on more realistic milestones, sure. I need to build reliable revenue month to month, but I’m not going to make that the final destination.

Why?

I know that if I achieve my audacious goal, everyone in my industry will be affected. Anyone who uses podcasting will know who we are and be affected by what we do. That’s my goal. Yes, it’s audacious, but holy sh*t, even if we only get halfway there, we’ve still made a real difference in the world.

Book the marathon instead of the half marathon. Declare to your team that you’ll double sales this year, instead of increasing them by 10%. It makes you think differently.

Peter Thiel (the insanely successful venture capitalist) encourages entrepreneurs to ask themselves, “How can I achieve my 10 year plan in the next 6 months?”

It might not be possible, but that’s not the point. It elevates your thinking. You start to look at your opportunities differently. Instead of tinkering with a Facebook ad campaign, maybe you realise you know someone who is friends with a highly influential person who could launch your business into the stratosphere.

Why not be bold? As my good friend Rick Clements says, “Step into your boldness.”

It’s a good place to be.
