Fergie’s “M.I.L.F. $” Video Critics Are Missing The Entire Point
Fergie’s video for her hit single “M.I.L.F. $ features a star-studded cast of celebrity moms like Kim Kardashian, Chrissy Teigen, and Ciara in all of their beautiful glory. The video, directed by Colin Tilley, looks to combat the hypocrisy of society when it comes to the desexualization of mothers.
The audience is exposed to images of moms in beautiful looks and sexy poses. The video also puts milk on center stage. In the video, milk is everywhere; from Fergie bathing in gallons of it, to it being poured onto the musician and her co-stars. On the surface the visual seems to be over sexualized, but in reality the images communicate the empowerment of mothers and their sexuality.
Seeing mothers owning and expressing their beauty and sexuality in such a way is important to the imagery of mothers in society. Not often are mothers portrayed this way in popular media. As soon as a woman becomes a mother, she is forced to shed her sexuality and present herself in an “appropriate” manner. While at the same time, society expects every woman, mother or not, to appear desirable and sexual. This doesn’t leave much room for women to decide how they want to portray their sexuality as individuals.
It also looks like we’ll be seeing more of the mommy empowerment from Fergie in the future. According to an interview with PopSugar.com, Fergie says there’s enough footage from the shoot to create several spin-off music videos.
