Dear NIKE,

For years, African Americans have endured the exhausting reality of racism and discrimination. We’ve all learned about the watered down version of slavery in our history classes and the events that took place during the Civil Rights Movement. We’ve shed tears as we think of the violence our ancestors endured and the cruelty they faced because of the color of their skin. We are thankful for our ancestors who have sacrificed their lives and the safety of their families in order to create change. For year, minorities have had to speak out against racism, police brutality and discrimination while others have chosen to be silent.

This is why I say THANK YOU. It is so easy to remain silent regarding injustices. I want to applaud you for knowing Colin Kaepernick’s heart and encouraging his mission to combat the disgusting treatment of African Americans in this country. I want to thank you because, while those who will never choose to walk in our shoes are framing Kaep’s [peacful] protest as negative, you have chosen to enforce and endorse his positive message. You understand that his intent was never to disrepect the American flag or OUR troops. You understand that African Americans who hear the words of the National Anthem have trouble relating. You understand that this is so much more than fabric with 13 stripes and 50 stars. You understand that Trayvon Martin should still be here today. Tamir Rice was just a child. Eric Garner’s last words should not have been “I can’t breathe”, while being choked by police. Michael Brown had a bright future ahead of him. Philando Castile should have never been shot and killed in front of his girlfriend and 4 year old daughter. You understand that this is just a snapshot of the countless African Americans who have died at the hands police officers. You understand that Kaep’s decision to take a knee was to bring awareness to the hurt and fear African Americans feel EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. You hear us and you see us, and I thank you.

One day, I will have to raise my brown children in this country and explain injustices and racial issues. My husband and I will have to teach them how to interact with police officers so they are able to make it home safely. We’ll have to console them the first time derogatory remarks are thrown their way. This is nothing new, as parents before me have had these same fears. The difference between now and then is that there are companies [like you] who are bold and are daring to speak out. I hope more companies begin to follow in your footsteps and start to spread light on the discrimination of African Americans.

Not once did you or Kaepernick belittle the bravery and sacrifices made by our troops. Not once did you intentionally disrespect the American flag. No, my friend. You did the opposite. You did what most are afraid to do. You took a side. You made a man who is seeking to end discrimination the face of your campaign while others remained silent. I am moved by your choice to use your platform to draw attention to this issue. Your message is loud and clear. Please know that while others are [pointlessly] burning your gear and choosing not to spend their money in your store, I will proudly wear your brand because of everything you stand for.
