Leggings with a purpose — Recovery Wear Leggings Review
One of my favorite things is when buying something I need (or want) also helps others. Jeff and I support things we believe in with our dollars — we frequently donate to fundraisers for good causes and support local and small businesses. So when a fellow fashion blogger shared a post on Instagram asking for support last week, I was instantly on board.
If you’re into fashion blogs, you probably follow Rachel and her blog, Pinteresting Plans. And you’ll know that Rachel and her family struggled with her husband Chris’s addiction, and are active recovery advocates now that he is sober. They started an athleisure clothing company called Recovery Wear that merges Rachel’s pretty, minimalist style with giving back. 5% of profits from Recovery Wear go towards addiction recovery efforts. I’ve been checking out her cute Recovery Wear leggings for a few weeks, but I decided I would purchase some after the move to Colorado.
Friends of Jeff and I know that addiction recovery is very important to us — Jeff joined a 12 step program and got sober with his former wife, who tragically passed away from cancer before we met. Additionally, my oldest teen has struggled with addiction over the past few years, and it can be extremely difficult on a family.
That’s why when Rachel posted last week that Recovery Wear was sponsoring an emergency rehab scholarship for a young man who had overdosed and been revived, I was glad that I had waited. She was offering a very generous 100% of proceeds to be donated for every Recovery Wear purchase. This story hit me so hard, I can only imagine how much fear and worry the parents and family were dealing with. Access to rehab and recovery programs can save lives, but it’s also expensive. Many families can’t afford it — so I was happy to purchase the two pairs of leggings I’ve been coveting to help donate to the rehab scholarship.
I’m pleased to report that they raised the money they needed in one day! And also pleased that my leggings shipped out the next day, and I got them in within the week — all the way from the east coast!
I purchased the marble Chris leggings and the camo Leston leggings, both in size small. The Recovery Wear website notes that the leggings are compression fit, but very stretchy, so you should order your normal size. I typically wear either a small or a medium, depending on brand. I know that I’ve worn a small in other brands of compression fit leggings, so I decided to go with that. (Also, I’m a few pounds heavier than I like to be, and intend to lose it so I didn’t want to buy leggings that would be too big in the future.)
The Chris legging first caught my eye when Rachel modeled them on the Pinteresting Plans Instagram. I loved the marble — I’m sure other brands make a marble pattern but I’ve never seen anyone wearing a pair in real life. It’s a beautiful and unique print! In real life, they are just as gorgeous. The white is bright and the marble pattern is distinct and lovely. These leggings are a simple, high waisted style with a contoured waistband that is faced with the same marble fabric. A detail I like is that there is elastic sewn into the top of the waistband, making sure that they won’t slip down as you wear them, like some leggings I’ve worn. They have a pieced seaming detail on the legs, which is sewn with contrast grey cover stitching. It’s a subtle detail but adds an elevated touch. I am 5’8 and they sit about an inch below my belly button. The legs end right above my ankle bone.
The Leston leggings are a very cool contemporary camo print, in sage green, cream and black. I like that the colors are muted and modern. This camo is definitely more streetwear than hunting trip. These leggings feature a very cute ruched waistband and a black mesh panel at the bottom of the leg. I love this ruched top! It’s a great detail that gives them a unique appearance. It also gives a nice lifted look to my butt. These leggings are also high waisted and come up to just under my belly button. The end right above my ankle bone as well.
Recovery Wear leggings are made out of a thin and silky feeling dry wicking performance fabric. The fabric feels extremely soft and smooth to the touch — very luxe! I wore the camo legging to a yoga workshop and they were very nice to practice in. They moved well with my body and didn’t require me to tug at the waist or reposition them as I moved between poses. I have thick legs and I was pleasantly surprised by how stretchy these leggings are. I was worried that the small might be too tight. When I pulled them out of the package, they looked TINY! But compression fit leggings are like that.
Compression fit is really good for me — I have low blood pressure and poor leg circulation, and compression garments help keep my leg circulation healthy.
I wore both leggings out to the coffee shop with my “teenage boy” athleisure looks this weekend — and they are definitely a cool and versatile addition to my wardrobe! I’m extremely pleased with the unique look and quality.
Now I have my eye on the Recovery Wear Gretchen moto joggers that just landed — the Apricot color is calling my name!
If you’re looking for some great, unique leggings from a small business, that help an important cause, I highly recommend Recovery Wear. You can shop the collection and read more about the Recovery Wear mission on their website.
