Keep your dollars; I want change.
Change…some fear it, others embrace it — I am a mix of both.
To start off my education career, my job was constantly changing. I started the 2011–2012 school year as a gifted and talented teacher at an elementary school, the following year (2012–2013) I moved to a private school where I taught everything: 6th grade: science, art, religion, literature, language arts; 7th grade: language arts; 8th grade: language arts. I then transitioned for the 2013–2014 school year to a middle school where I started teaching 8th grade writing intervention and working with 8th grade at risk students. By October, I was moved to teach 7th grade balanced literacy. After that, I switched schools again. For 2014–2015, I was teaching 6th grade balanced literacy that year.
The year after that (2015–2016)…something changed again. This time I was just changing my job — staying at the same school though! I became the tech integrator. Although come January 2016, I was also put back in the classroom to teach in our personalized learning community for the rest of the year. For the 2016–2017 school year, I again stayed at the same school and was in the same role as my previous year — technology integrator.
It was rather exciting to have the same position for two years in a row. I learned things I wanted to change, keep the same and improve on. I was able to reflect, grow and learn. I build rapport and some credibility with my colleagues and was invited to be in classrooms more.
After being at a school for three years, you find a home. It becomes your norm, your second family, your happy place…it quickly got changed when we were told our jobs were up to be cut when a referendum didn’t pass.
I then started looking for new work…I updated my resume, collected new letters of recommendation, re-filled out WeCan. Super fun things.
Shortly after applying to about 20+ positions, ranging from elementary school teacher, to middle school balanced literacy again, to tech coaches and computer classes, I was told my job was safe. The interview opportunities started coming. I did some reflection and decided unless I find a job I think will be a better fit long term — I’m keeping my current job. Where I feel safe, where my family is, what I know.
An opportunity to move to a new district, work out a new curriculum and teach computer science classes to middle schoolers presented itself. This sounded like the perfect next step for me. I realized through applying — technology truly is my passion. I would much rather be teaching those classes than balanced literacy again.
So for the 2017–2018 school year — I will be teaching computer science classes.
I’m excited to be in a new school but I’m also scared. I have to re-learn building norms, where to park, how to make copies, request sick days, etc…little things but when you’ve been in a district for 4 years become a quick routine. Will these new teachers be as awesome as the ones I’ve worked with or will I be an outsider trying to break through a tight knit clique?
It will be interesting being in a school where I can re-make my name. The past three years I was known as the teacher who attended every sporting event, every PTA meeting, every school dance…and always went above and beyond. If someone couldn’t attend, it was okay because, “Ms. Walsh will be there.” Will my school day truly end when the final bell rings?
Change is inevitable — so here’s to another one…
