Werewolves Within Is a Video Game Adaptation That’s Actually Good

The movie is very well cast and tightly directed

Traditionally, video games that get made into movies don’t tend to turn out all that well. Often times the filmmakers end up making something half baked as a result of a misplaced desire to pay proper tribute to the video game’s source material; leading to inadequacies that don’t translate well to the silver screen. Anyone who has seen the latest Tomb Raider film with its ridiculously forced quick time events, or this years Mortal Kombat — which literally has a character at one point say “flawless victory” — knows exactly what I’m talking about. These annoying and ostentatious tributes to the video games are heavy handed and get in the way of making a film that both fans and critics can both enjoy. Luckily, director Josh Ruben and writer Mishna Wolff have crafted a film that is superbly directed and hilariously written. Proving that it’s possible to pay tribute to the video game’s source material, while also making a good film that audiences who are unfamiliar with the game can also enjoy.

Werewolves Within is based on a VR game of the same name and takes place in a small town in the woods during winter. Our protagonist, Finn Wheeler (played by Sam Richardson), is a forest ranger who has recently been dumped by his girlfriend…
