Everyone loves kitchen islands because they provide more storage, more counter space and often more seating for today’s modern kitchens. You can make your kitchen island even more awesome by adding a prep sink.

A second sink in the kitchen? Can you imagine? We can! An addition like that will take your kitchen and your kitchen island to the next level.

As your online source for sinks, faucets, tubs and more, we at My Sinks and Faucets are happy to extol the many great qualities of prep sinks. We’ve never heard anyone complain about having a second sink in the kitchen. As you make plans to remodel your kitchen or add an island, here are five things to know about prep sinks.

Prepping Is for Prepping

Forget about terminology like main sink and secondary sink. Instead think prep sinks and cleaning sinks. You’ll likely want to use the sink in your island as your prep sink. This one, like our Stainless Steel Single Bowl Undermount Bar Sink, will be solely used for meal preparation.

Cleaning Is For Cleaning

Your cleaning sink likely works best elsewhere in your kitchen. You want it close to the dishwasher, and close to the cabinets where your dishes are placed. You also want good countertop space on both sides of your cleaning sink.

Placement Is Key for Prep Sinks

For prep sinks to be most effective, you want them to be close to the action. Have it near one end of your island, which gives you plenty of counter space on the island to work with. You also want it to be part of your cooking zone, within close reach of your stove and refrigerator.

Prep Sinks Help with Traffic Flow

If you have two sinks, it helps with traffic flow when you have more than one person working in the kitchen. You don’t want to slow your cooking momentum by having to stop to wash dishes in order to use the sink. Two sinks keeps everything moving.

It’s a Social Thing

Did you know we actually do more prepping than cleaning in our kitchens? That’s why it’s a good idea to have your prep sink in your island where you can be social with your guests. As they’re sitting and standing around the island, sipping, snacking and conversing, you’re right there in the middle of it all as you prep for the next dish. Or, like our Quadrangle Square Rustic Copper Kitchen Bar Sink, it can serve as a great bar sink where you make drinks for your guests while you await dinner from the oven.
