Fake. What is it?
How it works ? And how to protect your space from fakes?
The word “Fake” (fake) is firmly entrenched in our circulation, despite the English origin and pronunciation. And so firmly that we have a law using this word in the title, namely the “Fake News Law”, but this is not about that.
Let’s turn to the dictionary and find out what this foreign word “fake” means.
As you can see, fake means “fake”, “not real”.
The sources of misleading (fake) publications are different: someone probably does it for the sake of a joke, someone launches a kind of information virus: against the backdrop of an alarming topic for everyone, people circulate such information en masse. Negative images are the most attractive: our mind clings to the flaws rather than focusing on the good.
There are various fakes. For example ..
Someone wants to sell a product or drug in a wave of panic. Publications begin about the incredible benefits of this drug against the background of an unproven effect. People are at a loss, they want to believe in something and hope for something, so they grab every opportunity to add confidence to themselves in today and tomorrow. And they buy up untested drug in batches. Sometimes someone dies from it…
There are also those who receive commercial benefits from fakes. This is best illustrated by the episodes of the film “Contagion” about the respiratory virus pandemic: a blogger published a series of videos for money, where he was allegedly ill at first, and then cured of the virus with the help of the homeopathic drug Forsythia. People ran to pharmacies to buy at least one vial of the drug — both the manufacturer of this “medicine” and the blogger himself received commercial benefits. All others received only losses.
What is the damage from fakes and is it possible to fight them?
The damage from fakes, in my opinion, is huge. Sometimes it can be expressed in very serious amounts — for example, in 2016, the stock quotes of the French company Vinci fell by 20% (with a loss of about 7 billion euros of capitalization) due to fake news in the financial media about the dismissal of the company’s financial director.
Fakes confuse people’s minds, plunge them into panic and encourage them to make wrong and sometimes dangerous decisions.
Fakes are evil and we definitely need to fight them. In the current circumstances, especially.
Analytical tools for detecting fakes have been widely developed recently. There are different models with different architectures. There are organizations, including international ones, that are engaged in manual search and exposure of fakes.
However, one must understand that such technologies also have side effects in the form of false positive results: sometimes real, not fake content is blocked.
Are there other solutions? better?
Yes.
If we understand the fight against fakes not only as the work of a specific algorithm or specific actions in relation to a specific piece of text (or a specific person), then Exorde can play a serious role in defeating fakes!
