The Adventure Continues

Hello all,

What a time for MythicApps. Our applications just opened, which means marketing is ramping up, which means sponsorship is ramping up, which means my VP and I are slowly sinking into exhaustion. We could not be happier with how things are going….ok well maybe there are some things we’d change, but overall it’s awesome.

My job as Executive Director over the past few weeks has been a whooooooole lot of management. This is a skill that:

a. I don’t practice on a day to day basis (even though I frequently tell those guys at Chipotle how to make my burrito, I do not manage them) and

b. It is very trial and error.

Being a good manager is sort of like being on a see saw, but instead of the ground underneath you, there is the success of your event. You have to balance being tough and making sure things get done, while also praising your team when things are going well. Even more important, however, is making sure you are thinking 3 steps ahead of the rest of your team. Each person has their own individual job that they are focused on, whether it be emailing X sponsors, or adding a feature to the website, or finishing a budget; their job is right in front of them. As an organizer, it is my job to look at what is going on as a whole and think, “where do we need to be in a month? 2 months?” This is not easy, but it is crucial to making sure the hackathon train keeps rolling on the track.

I thank my lucky stars for the team that is working with me. Without them, MythicApps would not be possible. Keep a look out for more blog posts from myself, and others on our team. Also, APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN, so sign up at MythicApps.io.
