I’m a long time admirer of Neil Gaiman, especially for his raw honesty. I’ve known too many people who sugar coat ideas wit too much positivity and don’t prepare you for consequences when they fail or backfire. At the same time, I find that when I’m writing (which is on and off instead of everyday) I hear the constant negative reactions of past writing groups I was part of. The ones who criticized my descriptions, character development, plots, and even the genre I wrote about (sci-fi, fantasy). Stephen King wrote to “approach writing groups with caution”, but I didn’t get that advice till after I left my 6th writer’s group. I couldn’t improve while so many criticized. And that’s where Neil Gaiman’s advice about thick skin comes in. I know now to write without longing to have success like JK Rowling. I think what makes me stop though, is that who would want to read it? I know of few original fiction sites and LOTS of fan fiction sites. Then some will criticize fan fiction because you’re not developing original content, or criticize original content because it’s too generic.

I think from here, I need to know how I can attract an audience big or small with what I’ve written and where I can post it or how to do so without spending tons of $$$ on a website. Would it even be worth the trouble?
