Lumberjack Lingo
You know you’re a Lumberjack when you know what these terms mean

Whether you’re on campus for the first time, or about to start your senior year — here are some phrases to know 😉
1. “Meet me at the fries”

No, we don’t mean grab some french fries and meet us in the dining hall. This phrase is actually referring to a location on campus!
Where?
The tall spire statue on south campus that look like crinkle cut fries! Found between the Dub and the College of Health and Human Services on south campus, this special statue is a common meeting point for Jacks between classes.
Lumberjack fact: The official name is The Benchmark and was installed in 1984.
2. “North” vs. “South”

Arguably the easiest way to orient yourself on campus.
If you see the San Francisco peaks in front of you — you’re facing north!
The peaks behind you? You know you’re heading south.
3. “FLG”

This abbreviation can be seen on stickers, water bottles, and road signs around town… it may be self-explanatory, but yep! It means Flagstaff.
4. “The HLC”, “The Rec” or “The Gym”
These may sound like two different buildings, but both terms refer to the Health and Learning Center on North campus.

The Campus Recreation Center is located INSIDE of the HLC and this is where you’ll find the gym and NAU Outdoors offices!
5. “Union” vs. “Union Fieldhouse” vs “Union Point”

Unlike the HLC and the Rec, these terms actually do mean different buildings!
Union= where the main dining options on campus, along with numerous student service offices are located.
Union Fieldhouse= just north of the main union and holds auxillary sport courts, the NAU Office of Veteran Services, and the Student Union Network (SUN) offices!
Lastly, the Union Point can be found where the main union comes to a POINT by the peace pond.
Get it?
6. “The Louie Statue”
This one may require some context clues to really figure out — because there’s not one but THREE Louies on campus!
The bronze Louie is located at the Union Point and has an uncanny likeness to JFK.

The BIG Louie statue is located on south campus just outside of the Skydome.

Lastly, there’s also a Louie inside the Dome as well ready to help our Jacks kick axe always.

Bonus: The statue in front of Cline Library is also known as “Wisdom Louie.” Give him a tap for good luck before your exams!

7. “The South Fields”
These fields are located on the edge of south campus along McConnell drive and are home to the NAU Lacrosse, club soccer, and intramural teams!

It’s also the site of the annual Letters photo aka freshman photo.

Pro tip: Did you know that your Jacks Card can turn on the lights at the south fields? No playing in the dark here!
8. “The Observatory Field”

Looking to stargaze but don’t want to stray too far from your residence hall? The observatory field is located south of Sechrist Hall, just next to Reilly Hall. You can even see the research observatory from here and participate in one of the stargazing nights put on by the Astronomy students!
9. “The Wedge”

Not exactly a slice of pizza or cheese, but a campus market that services both! The Wedge is located just south of the union Starbucks and sells snacks, pizzas, sandwiches and late-night eats!
10. “The WAC”, “The Wall”, or “The pool”
All of these are names for the Aquatics and Tennis Complex on north campus.

This facility used to be called the “Wall Aquatic Center”, thus explaining the name “The Wall” and “The Wac”. No matter what you call this awesome new facility, it’s free to use with your student ID!

Bonus: We also have a hot tub.
