A few weeks ago I saw the blog post about why people need PhD. He showed this picture and pointed out that the impact is insignificant.

I disagree.

Firstly, imagine thousands of people pushing those boundaries of science. According to the scheme showed, after a few years amount of bachelor’s knowledge in the future would reach the size of master’s knowledge today. Same with master’s and PhD. People would get smarter.

Secondly, after graduation from bachelor’s degree and going to industry, people are reaching same level of knowledge as PhD only after half of their life (if not more). There is no need to spend half of your life learning things that you could learn in 4 years on the PhD.

Thirdly, imagine if most of the people stop doing PhD. Considering our human nature and tendency to forget stuff that we learn over the time that means that boundaries of our knowledge would decrease. And eventually we would end up in the materialistic and animal age, driven only by self-interest, greed and basic human needs.

That’s why people need PhD.
