I think it is perfectly reasonable for Democrats to use whatever mechanism they like to choose candidates. They can use a fainting goat to pick their standard bearer for all I care.

However if they are going to use methods which are not a simple tally of votes (or delegates) then they should not be draining funds from state and local coffers for their primaries.

And by the way, the same should go for the GOP.

The GOP has many times complained that they do not want people who are not registered as Republicans voting in their primaries, as they can do in open primary states.

Well let’s just stop having flippin’ primaries. Let the parties have internal methods to select candidates. The last primary I voted in there were no ballot measures, and only a smattering of minor offices were included on the ballot. It was essentially a massive expense on the behalf of the political parties, who did not contribute to the operating cost, though their campaign coffers are doubtless overflowing.
