I’m still not convinced that the snarky bro thing even defines the Basic Income culture. This concept wasn’t born in Silicon Valley, nor it is just hobbyists behind it. I think those from BIEN (Basic Income Earth Network) wouldn’t find it amusing in the least. From their website: “The Basic Income Earth network was founded in 1986 to serve as a link between individuals and groups committed to or interested in basic income, and fosters informed discussion on this topic throughout Europe.”
Certainly this movement is much bigger than a few Create-a-thons in the Bay Area. Yes, you needed to make your article stand out, and you chose to attack the culture in a “playful” way. I’m not against playful and more of that is needed everywhere in the world. Yet I don’t believe the only way to get people to talk about it is to make fun of those who are investing themselves in it.
As a housewife I see UBI as a means to begin to acknowledge the work of life, caring for others, art and ourselves as well as the Earth. I can’t imagine if I had an income for the hours of work I’ve done raising children the past sixteen years. I left programming to do what I thought was right for my kids, and I don’t think the world owes me anything. What I do think is we owe each other the trust and confidence that is behind a BI society — that we all deserve life and caring for one another is our purpose as a community.
