NTENT will be participating at The Web Conference in San Francisco, CA (May 13–17, 2019) as a Silver Sponsor. Our CTO Dr. Ricardo Baeza-Yates will be co-chairing the conference, as well as presenting a workshop titled, “9th Temporal Web Analytics Workshop” and a 3-Hour tutorial “Designing Equitable Algorithms for the Web.”

The Temporal Web Workshop, beginning on Monday, May 13, will occur over two days and cover sessions with multiple topics on Web Preservation, Search & Analytics, and Social Behavior. Co-chairs of the event include Marc Spaniol of the Université de Caen and Julien Masanès of the Internet Memory Research, both in France. Dr. Baeza-Yates will also act as a moderator on a special panel on Web Preservation. Emphasis will be given to temporal data analysis along the time dimension for web data that has been collected over extended time periods. This presents a major challenge due to the sheer size of the data exposed and the ability to make sense of this data in a useful way. The workshop will address the necessity of web-scale data analytics to develop infrastructures and extended analytical tools to assist with understanding and implementation.

The Designing Equitable Algorithms for the Web tutorial, presented by Ricardo Baeza-Yates and Sharad Goel, will take place on May 13 from 9:00 to 12:30. The tutorial will cover how machine learning algorithms increasingly affect both our online and offline experiences. Researchers and policymakers, however, have rightfully raised concerns that these systems might inadvertently exacerbate societal biases. We provide an introduction to fair machine learning, beginning with a general overview of algorithmic fairness, and then discussing these issues specifically in the context of the Web.

About The Web Conference:

Celebrating 30 years of the Web this year, The Web Conference, began in 1994 and is organized by a team of volunteers from around the world in conjunction with the International World Wide Web Conferences Steering Committee (IW3C2). At a time when more than 50% of the world’s population will have access to the Web through the internet, the goal of the conference is to provide a forum for discussion and debate about the evolution of the Web, inviting researchers, policy makers, developers, users and commercial ventures to reflect on the past three decades of Web history, and how to ensure a future Web that is truly inclusive, open and promotes good.
