It is easy to take the Union Square Greenmarket and our favorite farmers for granted sometimes. There they always are, rain or shine, sleet or snow every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday bringing us the foods we can’t live without. Visitors to New York are often shocked to hear that some of our Greenmarkets operate year-round and wonder what farmers and producers could possibly sell during the winter. Our markets in the winter are great places to fill your fridge full of hearty storage crops, creamy cheeses, milk and other dairy products, fresh meats and seafood, pickles, jams and preserves, artisan breads, and these days even more greens grown indoors.
Back in 1982, when the Union Square Greenmarket first went year-round the New York Daily News devoted the front page of their February 1st edition to the exciting announcement of the year-round market. The article features Union Square fixtures Martin’s Pretzels and Hawthorne Valley plus an unforgettable quote from Fifth Floor Kitchen’s Fred Price. Here is a copy of the article from the archives submitted by Fred Price himself so you can get a glimpse of winter market life in the early years.
