Raúl reelected as First Party Secretary
With the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz, and Army General Raúl Castro Ruz in attendance, the 7th Party Congress final session continues today, April 19, with 1,200 delegates and invitees participating.
Emilia Neuri, president of the leadership election commission, announced the results, after votes to elect a new Central Committee were counted.
Neuri reported that a total of 991 delegates voted, and 100% of the ballots were valid. She explained that the candidates received more than 99.6% of the votes, and were therefore all elected to the Central Committee.
Susely Morfa González, a young member of the newly elected body explained why she proposed reelecting Raúl as First Secretary, saying that it was a privilege to present the unanimous decision, which, she said, is proof that younger generations have confidence in the Revolution’s leadership, adding that Raúl always talks about Fidel, and maintains his own “clear and firm thinking, flexible and open to change.”
The Political Bureau membership and Secretariat were also announced, along with José Ramón Machado Ventura’s election to continue as Second Secretary.
Raúl addressed the composition of the Political Bureau, noting that its 17 members include a modest four women, five Black or mixed race members, two heads of mass organizations, five Council of State vice presidents, three Council of Ministers vice presidents, and four generals, including the First Secretary. Five new members were elected to this body.
