I always loved driving through places that were just fields, trees and farmland — lakes and hills and around mountains. I liked it so much I can go outside and watch it every day. As for being flyover country, sometimes it is exciting to listen to and watch the low-flying black helicopters and the tiny single engine or double engine planes and the faint jets above them. Living in these picturesque surroundings does present certain problems though; you’re right though. I do think about how life must have been for people living out in the middle of nowhere back in the pre-automobile days. There are remnants of tiny towns all around here. I can tell that they used to be gathering places, probably local markets, rural post offices, churches (those appear every few blocks). They started dying out when America started to centralize in larger towns and cities; then people who lived where I live had to use automobiles to make long treks into towns to make a living. Thanks, Gail! That was a nice reverie! And I’d be excited like a 5-year-old too if I could feed prairie dogs! 😁
