I think you’ve identified a quintessential inflection point with the progress of human civilization. First they build structures to keep the bears out. They populate these structures with comfort-enhancing items. Then they take all this on the road and set it up outside as if daring the bears to attack. With civilization comes hubris, and concurrent with hubris is blindness. Thus, the bears climb on the backs of the civilized human species and we lose our advantage through inattention to what got us here in the first place.
