Divide and conquer: it is so old hat that it becomes plain boring.
Trump knows his popularity feeds off not properly calling out his supporters.
John Hopkins

Old hat, but depressingly popular as a political trick. Trump is also afraid, this time of alienating a bloc of supporters. By making sure he didn’t immediately call them out by name, he knew they would take that omission as tacit approval. It is funny: saying that Trump was “afraid to offend” sounds quite alien to his professed nature of telling it like it is, without pandering to special interest groups. More and more, it sounds like Trump simply employs bully tactics and playground politics — show a tough front and don’t piss off your mates.
