Video games are a waste of entrepreneur’s time
This is not to knock games, as they are good form of entertainment, but they are a bit of a waste of time. When asked why I don’t play games anymore or as many as I used to, I reply “there are better things to do with my time, such as write a book, build a blog or build a business”.
Back in October 2014 I was working with a small company that made apps and video games, I was their animator. On our way out of the office, myself and the main guy in charge were talking and he asked me “what kind of games do you play?”, and I replied “mostly business simulation games”. To which he replied- and I will never forget this- “why don’t you do it for real?”
It was at this point that further reinforced my desire to push forward into entrepreneurship and, potentially, was the death-nail in my desire to play videos games.
I used to play a lot of games from 2002–2010. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, The Outfit, Halo 2, 3 and 3, as well as Civilisation V. I even studied how to make games from 2009–2014, after which I realised that I was more of a leader, than follower and that games was not quite for me because I always had a niggling feeling where I was asking myself: “what value do videos games bring to society? To the world? And to civilisation?”
In 2012 I realised the principle that even if you spend time playing a game; you subsequently, get nothing accomplished in real life. This did not come to fruition until September 2014, where upon I got a free game online, and I played it for 8 hours, after which I realised that I did not like the game and that I had accomplished nothing in my life by playing this game. So, I stopped playing that game and have never touched it since.
So now, I rarely play games, more so as way to relax and take my mind off work- but rarely does this happen. But, to play a game all day and all week, leads to not much being accomplished in your life.
They are a great form of entertainment and a nice past time, but too much of them and they are a waste of time. A costly distraction. The real cost of a video game is not the cost to buy the game, but the time taken away from your business or from focusing on other, more important, things.
Question of the day: what are you doing that you know is a waste of time?
