My $0 Debt Story
College isn’t the only option anymore
I decided not to go to college. It started with a gap year, and turned into much more opportunity than college could have given me. I can now work from anywhere I want to at anytime I choose, I forge my own projects and can’t imagine going to college now.
It was the right solution 50 years ago
I always tell people that the best part of my job is that I don’t have a job title. Why? because I spend my days finding out what needs to be done and doing those things. I go from design to development to marketing in a matter of hours and for me that’s perfect. I work for a number of companies including Total Package Hockey (TPH) a hockey company and WebMedley a digital marketing agency.
I don’t have a job title
Here is the thing about my job, it is always changing. I always hear stories about people struggling to get $9/hour web design jobs after going to college and get their design degree and my initial thought is what do you think you missed in 4 years? The answer is everything.
The best example is a content management system (CMS) called WordPress. You don’t need to know what WordPress does exactly to get a grip of it’s importance. It is now used by over 30% of all websites. The biggest thing about WordPress is that it was founded just 10 years ago. Now think of this, you go to college get a degree then come out and find that everyone is using WordPress not instead of coding
everything by hand. That changes everything and really makes that time, and debt pretty unnecessary.
WordPress developers are in huge demand
I don’t think anyone would look at the world today and say that it is the same as it was 50 years ago. With the increasingly rapid change, why take 4 years off to party instead of jumping into the real world? More and more I think people aren’t using their degrees, so why go into large amounts of debt for it? I have yet to find someone that buys a $100,000 sports car, spends years of their life paying it off, then lets it sit in the driveway and never use it.
Think carefully about college
When thinking about college, the best way to come out of it debt free is to simply not go in at all.
