Day 38 — Work

Today was full on. My dad called me last night asking if I could help him out at a job and I agreed, then he told me that he would pick me up at 6:20am. I regretted everything but he had already put the phone down by that point so I sat in my room worrying about the little amount of sleep I was going to get. It made me nervous and I couldn’t settle my head until 1am.

I panic-slept and woke up at 5am, smiled and went back to sleep as soon as possible. Anyway, the day started, my Dad picked me up and we headed to deep South-East London. I have been a labourer for my fathers building company since I was about 15. It’s been on and off obviously but today I donned my steel toe cap shoes, workman trousers and signature blue t shirt. I was ready for work work work when it came to clothing but physically?

Nah.

I haven’t laboured for my Dad for a few months and circuit training has not been a part of my training regime for probably two months. My body is weak right now and that’s not what you want when you have to move around buckets of cement all morning. It was hot, it tired me out, it made me feel older to be honest. Urgh.

By 2pm my first job was all wrapped up and then I rushed home because I had to teach at 4 right through to 7.

I love the Thursday kids, they’re some of the first I started teaching and I’ve slowly been able to see some of them improve and learn new things in the pool with me. They trust me and I always try my best to make their lessons enjoyable. I’ll always have a soft spot for them.

The early start began to take its toll on me and I was left wondering if this is the life I want for the next few months? Work for Dad in the morning, teach kids in the early evening? It’s not a bad gig when I take having a social life etc. out of the equation. More to think about then.

Rihanna is necessary…for the culture

Work finished and I rushed home so I could run with my friend Jake and then vote for the next London Mayor. We ran steadily through my local park and then got list in Homerton looking for the polling station. Once I finally found it I scribbled a big X next to Sadiq Khan’s name, hoping to see the news I want tomorrow.

After that, my work wasn’t done. I had to edit a poster for my Mum for an event she’s holding at her Pub. I had to use Photoshop. I don’t know how to use Photoshop but I figured it out for her.

Once that was finally finished, I could really put my feet up and breathe.

Today was filled with nothing but work and quality time. My happiest moment was that I managed to help both of my parents out today, and that hasn’t happened since I was a kid. Maybe I am growing up after all.
