Love this write up. I think it’s important to remember that most people on all sides of this are coming at the issue with good intentions, and I think when you see things like the recent attacks on Joss Wheadon, what you are really getting are young people who have latched on to the strengthening wave of social progress.

It has become “cool” to defend the the rights of underrepresented peoples, especially on social media. The only problem is that most of these people don’t have enough life experience to take a more nuanced approach to their crusade. I see it in the friends of my younger sibling: too quick to judge, and not enough empathy. And the consequences of the interconnectedness of social media means that these people’s knee jerk reactions can be immediately and permanently stored online. Also, these kids are growing up in a time where they are expecting everyone to have certain social values, not realizing that there have been huge paradigm shifts in just the last 10–20 years. I’m not too old myself that I can’t remember myself getting excited about certain calls to justice without fully understanding the history or context of the issue.

Again, loved this. Great article.
