I’m a diehard fan of original, non-rebooted content, but there are franchises that produce good material as well and I’ll never shrug off a film before giving it a chance with critics first. If a rebooted Matrix means more content at the box office—meaning more jobs for VFX and stunt artists in Hollywood and more inspiration for young budding filmmakers or writers in theaters—that’s definitely a positive. I don’t think reboots necessarily overshadow indie/original storytelling; it’s just creating more of an incentive for content to be good enough to rise to the top.
If more Matrix can inspire more John Wick, even if it takes a few years, that’s worth a bad reboot. I’ll pay for whichever one is better.
