Why should you attend the Workshop on Purpose?
Did you know that living your life with purpose has an effect on your happiness and your health?
Your purpose may be different to another, you are unique and your purpose is unique to you. You have a definitive purpose in life and so does the other person. Purpose means different things to different people. I know of individuals whose purpose is to: raise a happy family, to care for the animals, to care for the environment, to teach children, to care for people, to be gardeners, to be musicians and the list goes on. For some people it is contributing to social change. It could be more self-focused, like doing well on the job. Or it could be about creativity.
It may not be fully clear as to how purpose adds to health apart from noticing that purposeful individuals live healthier lives and a sense of purpose may well protect you from the harmful effects of stress. I have noticed that people who are not congruent and authentic with living their life in alignment with what gives them joy are more prone to stress. The artist and musician will never be fully happy with a commercial career in the city, in the same way that the musician may never be fully happy as a nurse.
More recently psychologists have looked at whether having a sense of purpose have an effect on aging and adult development. Patrick Hill, an assistant professor of psychology at Carleton University, at Ottawa and colleagues looked to see how more than 6,000 people answered questions like “Some people wander aimlessly through life, but I am not one of them,” and other questions that gauged positive and negative emotions.
They found that 14 years after those questions were asked, people who had reported a greater sense of purpose and direction in life were more likely to outlive their peers.
From the research, it was astounding that in fact, people with a sense of purpose had a 15 percent lower risk of death, compared with those who said they were more or less aimless. Also, it didn’t seem to matter when people found their direction. It could be in their 20s, 50s or 70s.
New York Times 3 June 2014 reported:
Purpose on many counts is a good thing to have, long associated with satisfaction and happiness, better physical functioning, even better sleep. “It’s a very robust predictor of health and wellness in old age,” said Patricia Boyle, a neuropsychologist at the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center in Chicago.
Dr. Boyle said: “People with purpose “have a sense of their role in the community and the broader world.” She particularly mentioned mentoring, passing one’s memories or experiences on to younger people, as a way to stoke a sense of purpose.
The sad thing is most people never invest the time to discover their purpose and it may be said that the life without purpose is a life not lived.
In this workshop Neslyn will serve you and lead you through the journey of discovering your purpose starting with your dreams, what inspires you? When do you feel most close to your creator? If you knew the service that you are here to offer to humanity and all sentient beings — what is that service?
You are supported to look at patterns in your life. You see, your purpose is always communicating with your inner and outer life.
Neslyn asks you to think deeply and examine carefully — Who are you? What are your highest values and priorities? What legacy do you want to leave in this life? What makes you smile?
Working with Neslyn on this workshop will take you on a journey of discovery and you may well find that your life may shift to progressively more fuller expression and even more complete happiness.
