Forget touch and voice controls: Google’s next wireless earphones and smartwatches could be controlled by a simple skin painting.

Google is working on a skin interface for several wearable devices, including ones that resemble Google’s Pixel Buds and Pixel Watch, according to a recently awarded patent discovered by LetsGoDigital.

This new patent shows how similar movements may be applied to the skin surrounding your ears, similar to how you can alter the volume or play/pause your music by swiping up and down on some true wireless earbuds.

Users would control what they view by swiping on their arm, wrist, and back of their hand, rather than swiping on their smartwatch display.

The devices will accomplish this, according to the patent, by utilizing several sensors that can detect surrounding movements and transform them into identifiable controls.

Furthermore, Google has added machine learning technology that can discriminate between these intended motions and ordinary movements, so you won’t have to worry about forgetting to turn off your wireless headphones when you want to eat your lunch or scratch that itchy itch.
