The new headphones, which we’re guessing will be dubbed the WH-1000XM5 if Sony keeps to its current naming pattern, could have been revealed in a recent patent filed by Sony that details a set of wireless noise-canceling headphones.
The new noise-canceling headphones have a fairly regular release schedule, with new models being introduced in August for the last three years — and with the secrecy agreement on the patent scheduled to expire in August of this year, the time is ripe for a new pair of Sony noise-cancellers.
We’re sure more information will become available before then, but for now, here’s all we know about the Sony WH-1000XM5 so far, as well as some features we’d want to see in the company’s next over-ear headphones.
Sony hasn’t confirmed that the WH-1000XM5 is in the works, but 2022 seems like a natural moment for the company to introduce a successor to the Sony WH-1000XM4. It’s been two years since Sony released a pair of flagship over-ears, and based on previous launches, an August release date for the company’s next model seems reasonable.
The secrecy agreement on the patent listing that gave us our first look at the upcoming Sony headphones expires in August. The Sony WH-1000XM4 was released on August 6, 2020, and the Sony WH-1000XM3, their predecessor, was released on August 30, 2018.
The patent we saw didn’t say how much Sony’s future headphones will cost, but we can make an educated guess based on the Sony WH-1000XM5’s price, as Sony has always been very consistent with its flagship headphones pricing.
When they were released in 2020, the Sony WH-1000XM4 (affiliate link) cost $349.99 / £349 / AU$549, and the Sony WH-1000XM3 cost the same in the US and Australia (albeit they were a little cheaper in the UK at £300).
