Recap: The #NEVYs17 Nominees and Category Criteria

The 2017 NEVY Awards presented by GE are this Wednesday, May 17th at the House of Blues. The Fifth Anniversary show is set to to top its predecessors, bringing New Orleans to New England in a Mardi Gras extravaganza — Innovation with a Hint of Cajun.

2017 NEVYs Healthcare & Life Science Categories

For all categories, achievements considered took place in the NEVYs voting year: March 2016-February 2017.

Hottest Early Stage Startup — Therapeutics: Nominees are startups with the potential to produce a groundbreaking treatment, meet an unmet need, or change the way we look at treatment delivery.

Hottest Early Stage Startup — Tools and Technology: Nominees are startups working on a groundbreaking technology, device, or tool with the potential to impact the future of treatment.

Entrepreneur of the Year: Nominees are leading dynamic, potentially game-changing businesses. Their companies should be known for a strong employer brand / positive company culture, and they themselves should be vocal civic leaders and known for ethical leadership.

Rising Star VC: Nominees are non-partner level investors with <7 years experience in VC. They are active around town, have a strong voice in the Boston ecosystem, and generally known to be “on the rise” at their firm or in the community in general.

Fund of the Year: Nominees are judged on a number of factors: Local exits, volume of local investments, total dollars deployed locally, new funds raised, and local engagement — with entrepreneurs, community organizations; offering resources, hosting events.

Deal of the Year: Nominees are companies. Deals are judged on a number of factors: Total deal value; deviation from norm (in terms of valuation or deal size to stage of development); deal complexity; and upfront value generated.

Exit of the Year: Nominees are companies. Exits are judged on overall returns, impressive time-to-exit, and proportion of value returned to founders. (Exits resulting in workforce reduction or removal from the local ecosystem were not considered.)

Digital Health Company of the Year: Nominees are impressive venture-backed companies — stage agnostic — driving the Digital Health movement forward in MA. (Factors include: investment, jobs created, press garnered, etc.) Nominees should have raised money, executed a significant transaction, or had a meaningful liquidity event during the voting year.

Tech Categories and Criteria

For all categories, achievements considered took place in the NEVYs voting year: March 2016-February 2017.

Hottest Early Stage Startup: Nominees have raised a Seed or Series A (not more); the company is exciting and generating buzz in the investment community, demonstrates meaningful growth potential, and is a consensus “company to watch” heading into 2017 and beyond.

Rising Star Entrepreneur: Nominees are founders of earlier stage companies that have not yet have exited or raised late-stage funding; they have not led previous companies to exist as founder. Nominees should be vocal / active in the ecosystem, have a reputation for ethical leadership, and should be building organizations known for a positive company culture.

Entrepreneur of the Year: Nominees are founders of dynamic, potentially game-changing businesses. In the past year, their companies should have aggressively added jobs in the New England region, and generally be known for a strong employer brand. They themselves should have been vocal in the community, and known for ethical leadership.

Angel of the Year: Nominees are individuals making an impact on Boston’s early stage venture economy, investing their own money, providing guidance to entrepreneurs — and with notable successful / growing / winning investments in the ecosystem.

Next Pillar Tech Company: Nominees are companies with at least 50 employees and have raised at least a Series B. They should have a disruptive, game-changing product / platform, strong company culture / employer brand, and have demonstrated a commitment to growing in the New England region for the long-term.
