The Syndicate Sessions: More than just Networking

The next generation of investors in Boston learning about fund formation at the JLL office

Earlier this year, the NEVCA officially launched ‘The Syndicate Sessions’ to provide community, insight and interaction for Principals and Senior associates from VC firms in New England. We continue this quarterly series knowing that the future of the venture and startup community will be shaped by the connections, partnerships and ideas that form here.

Venture & the Non-Profit Sector

We kicked off the event by introducing Kate Barrett, ED of Greenlight Fund, who spoke of translating the best of venture into the non-profit sector. Barrett described their projects including access to higher education, the foster system and developing tools that allow communities to identify and solve their critical and local needs. Having committed over $7.2 Million to their Boston portfolio companies, Greenlight Fund and Barrett are a force to watch out for in the social innovation field.

Fund Formation

Nick Gutila led an engaging workshop on the intricacies of fund formation for the entrepreneurial VC. Gutila walked the group through key provisions of a fund structure and market standard vesting, putting together a timeline from pre-marketing to soft commitments, to closing and post-closing. The group had several questions for Gutila ranging from documentation and agreements to advisory boards and scaling. It was evident from the workshop that there is much more left to be discussed.

Attendees

In attendance were investors from Anterra Capital, Battery Ventures, .406 Ventures, Bessemer Venture Partners, Fairhaven Capital, F-Prime Capital, General Catalyst, MVM Capital, PJC, Saturn Partners, SV Health Investors, Underscore VC, Highland, Sigma Prime, Alexandria Venture Investment, Romulus, Novo Ventures, RA Capital, Spark Capital, Schooner Capital, Valia Investments, MCRC, Converge and more.

Thank you to our sponsors, Deloitte and JLL, for making the event possible.
