New Look Laser Clinic : vitiligo Diagnosis essential to opt for best treatment

Pigmentation disorder is termed as Vitiligo. This skin disorder occurs due to the destruction of the melanocytes (the cells that make pigment) in the skin which leads to appearance of white patches on skin. Even the hair growth on vitiligo affected areas is sometimes white. This depigmentation could appear in any part of the body but if it’s visible, it surely bothers.
Vitiligo causes loss of color. Your dermatologist may call this “loss of pigment” or “depigmentation.” We can lose pigment anywhere on our bodies, including our: skin hair (scalp, eyebrow, eyelash, and beard); hence can’t be ignored.
Once you observe even slightest loss of skin color, it is advisable to consult a doctor for desired diagnosis. Generally, doctor will use a family and medical history, physical exam, and tests to diagnose vitiligo. The questions that the doctor might ask are:
- Do you have family members with vitiligo?
- Does any of your family member or you have any autoimmune diseases?
- Was there any rash, sunburn, or other skin problem before the white patches appeared?
- Did your hair turn gray before age 35?
- Did you have some type of stress or physical illness?
- Is your skin sensitive to the sun?
A proper physical exam will be carried out by the doctor to rule out other medical problems.
Tests might include:
- Taking a small sample (biopsy) of the affected skin to be examined
- Blood tests
- An eye exam.
