Most Americans support the First Amendment, but very few know all five protections it offers. Each year the First Amendment Center of the Freedom Forum Institute conducts a State of the First Amendment survey. While 2018’s survey revealed that 77% of Americans are supportive of the freedoms offered by the amendment, just “one respondent out of the 1,009 people surveyed was able to correctly name all five freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment.”

While 56% of respondents could name freedom of speech as a right, from there the numbers dropped drastically — 15% named freedom of religion; 13% named freedom of the press; 12% named freedom of assembly; and just 2% named the right to petition.
