Washington, DC — Thursday, February 23, 2017 — Mark Silva is the assistant managing editor of U.S. News & World Report’s new Best States platform, U.S. News editor and chief content officer Brian Kelly announced today. The new site, to be unveiled in late February, will feature rankings, tools and analysis to measure how states best serve their citizens. Following on the heels of Best Countries, released last year, Best States is part of U.S. News’ expanded efforts to evaluate government leadership.

Silva joined the company last October to build a team of correspondents and contributors to take a deeper look at the stories in each of the states. Best States will launch with contributions from veteran capitol and state government reporters across the country, including John Frank from the Denver Post; Jason Noble from the Des Moines Register; and Ricardo Lopez from the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

The platform will be updated on a daily basis with fresh reporting, analysis and op-eds from state government leaders and policymakers. U.S. News correspondents, including The Report’s David Catanese, will also write for the site. Lindsey Cook, U.S. News’ data editor and an expert at making public data more accessible, will oversee the data visualization elements and rankings of the Best States — a key component of Best States.

Previously, Silva has held newsroom leadership and reporting jobs — covering the White House for the Chicago Tribune and later leading the U.S. government reporting team at Bloomberg News in Washington. He also ran the state capital bureau of the Miami Herald for 15 years.

The new site, out on February 28, 2017, will also feature state profile pages, historical information, photos, videos, and interactive data tools to give citizens a full picture of what’s working and what needs to be improved across the country.
