On Watching Brown Shows While Brown
Ramna Safeer

I don’t want to say, “It’s better than nothing.” This doesn’t exactly capture how I feel about this topic. As a male Asian American for instance, I have been wanting more shows since I was a kid to star a male Asian American.

Sure, there may be a few out there (e.g. Fresh Off the Boat comes to mind as an actually competent show), but there are definitely not many.

At the same time, I also agree with you that these shows can often be relegated to stereotype-filled sitcoms instead of just having characters who happen to be of a certain ethnic group.

It’s tricky. People should embrace diversity in the shows, but artificial diversity can be tough to swallow sometimes.

I just think there is no easy answer for all of this.

One clap, two clap, three clap, forty?
