A picture of Markiplier

This is Mark Fischbach (known online as Markiplier), a popular content creator who plays a variety of games with his friends, family, and other content creators.

Notice Anything Similar?

If you squint your eyes in juuuusst the right way…

A picture of Lord Marquaad.

Ah, yes… Lord Marquaad.

Huh?

The Markiplier E meme references a deep-fried image of Markiplier’s face photoshopped onto Lord Farquaad with a giant letter “E” (Adam).

That’s the whole explanation. I know, this meme is pretty random.

But Markiplier E has not always been the same, as the meme has evolved (I guess?) over the course of several years.

The E Timeline

This meme started in May 2015, when Youtuber Cyndago posted the image above (Adam).

The internet eventually picked up on the humor and made some… adjustments to the image.

I bet memers would make great chefs because they sure know how to deep fry

The meme continued to spread throughout 2018, with the image transitioning into another deep-fried image — showing Markiplier photoshopped onto Mark Zuckerberg (Adam).

As of right now, this is the current form of Markiplier E.

Basic Structure

Despite the many variations of the E meme, There’s not actually that much to the basic structure of the meme. There are three main components of the meme: the background, the letter, and the effects.

The background is just Markiplier’s face photoshopped onto someone. Technically, if we’re being more specific, we could also photoshop Lord Marquaad’s face onto someone — meaning that we would be photoshopping Markiplier photoshopped onto someone… onto someone.

From this, a letter — usually an E — in the Impact font is added to the picture. The letter’s not usually super huge, as it usually only covers the bottom middle of the image; however, honestly, I don’t see a problem with the letter being 100x bigger/smaller; if anything, an E covering half the screen could add to the chaos and possibly the funniness of the image!

The final addition usually made is the effects — which is usually where you turn on the meme stove and deep fry that image until the saturation and graininess are higher than the Eiffel Tower in the middle of Kansas.

Continuing The Format

This meme probably stemmed from the (kind of) noticeable observation that Markiplier does look a bit like Lord Farquad. However, it does not end there.

The basic structure of Markiplier E is pretty unanimous, so it’s not surprising that Markiplier E has been used in many more characters other than those in Shrek.

E But It’s Not E

Here are some variations and remixes of Markiplier E.

Conclud’E’ng

Markiplier E is a random “no context” meme that comprises Markiplier being photoshopped onto multiple characters — either for a pun, for completing a meme, or simply for no context.

I personally enjoyed Markiplier E, despite the absolute chaos of this meme. To be fair, I am a bit biased — as deep-fried memes, no context memes, and 2015+ memes are kind of my thing. However, regardless, the pure randomness of the meme does make it very funny and entertaining to see every now and then.

Through the random and obscure nature of Millenial and Gen Z humor, the E meme has really come into its own — with many around the world creating, sharing, and chuckling over a letter.
