In addition to her professional career, Nichole Thiel also has a strong interest in domesticated exotic birds, including the fascinating severe macaw.

A native of southern South America and southern Central America, the severe macaw is the largest of the birds in the mini-macaw category, which also includes Hahn’s macaws, yellow-collared macaws, and Illiger’s macaws. Though these birds are small in size, any one of the mini-macaws generally possesses big and expressive personalities.

Severe macaws have impressive speech capabilities, and are often able to develop extremely large vocabularies. They generally respond well to training, and can learn many tricks. Although these birds are known to be quite social, it is important with an exotic parrot that you spend time with them daily in order to reinforce their training and behavior. Without this attention, your pet may become bored, exhibiting destructive behaviors or even becoming ill from stress-related illnesses.

Before deciding to adopt one of these exotic animals, know that the cost of owning an exotic bird can be quite high, and the time commitment is considerable. It is vital to provide your pets with stimulation, exercise, and enough space for them to be comfortable. Contact a reputable breeder to purchase a macaw, or look for an adoption agency that adopts out exotic animals. Because of the demands of exotic bird ownership, these birds are sadly often given up for adoption, so you may indeed be able to find one near you.

As you would before adopting any pet, make sure you are well educated about the specific needs of severe macaws so you can provide them with lifelong care and support.
