What’s In A Bio? The New Nick Cooney Biography

I’ve been learning more about SEO, and after reading some best practice tips I’ve decided to update my current bio. Below is the result. Let’s hope that suggested best practices are indeed useful.

Nick Cooney is Founder and Managing Partner at Lever VC, a venture capital fund investing in early stage companies in the alternative protein sector (plant-based and “clean”/cell-based meat, egg and dairy companies). Lever VC operates globally, with offices in Hong Kong and the U.S. and staff in the US, Hong Kong, Europe, and Israel. He has been working in the alternative protein space for over 15 years. Nick is the Co-Founder and former Managing Trustee of New Crop Capital venture capital trust and Co-Founder of the Good Food Institute, the world’s largest non-governmental organization working to grow the alternative protein space, with a team of over sixty staffers worldwide.

Over his investment career Nick invested in over 25 alternative protein companies around the world, including Beyond Meat, Memphis Meats, and other market leaders with combined value of nearly $2 billion USD. He currently serves on the board of several portfolio companies in the space.

In his previous policy work in the alternative protein sector, Nick oversaw $2 million annual budgets and managed a team of 45 staff working to promote and market alternative protein products to consumers across North America, South America and Asia, and make similar food policy improvements. He also worked with major international food companies such as Nestle, Subway and others on adding more alternative proteins and other issues. Early in his career, he taught entrepreneurship and helped launch a healthy food startup through a University of Pennsylvania program affiliated with the Wharton School.

Nick is also a writer: he is the author of Veganomics, a textbook of the alternative protein space, which takes a research- and data-based look at heavy consumers of alternative proteins and what motivates them to choose these products. Nick’s work has been featured in hundreds of media outlets worldwide, and he has lectured through Europe as well as at Harvard, Yale, Google, CraigsList, and other key locations in the United States. Nick grew up in Philadelphia, graduated Magna Cum Laude from Hofstra University in New York, and has lived in San Francisco, New York, Philadelphia and Washington DC. He currently divides his time between the United States and China/Hong Kong S.A.R.

Nick and his wife live in the greater New York City area with their dog Rosy. When not working, Nick enjoys biking, hiking, working out, and watching comedies (his favorite comedians: George Carlin and Ricky Gervais).
