My Series novel update ver. 9/11

Please read and follow my Series (link) — the project this post describes.

First upload of most of my novel to Medium’s Series format (which is inspiring in itself). I’d consider this a 3rd or 4th draft. I began planning this piece over 3 years ago and have a good understanding of the overall structure, plot, and characters. The draft I’m keeping in a separate file weighs in over 20,000 words, but I am liking the card structure of medium, as it allows me to see a final published work in the midst of larger idea. I think it suits my writing style, and how each chapter is a different character’s perspective.

I’m feeling more motivated about this writing than any other work I’ve done, partly because I feel comfortable with my voice, and that I’m finally writing from my gut, and believe in the work. Even getting to this stage feels like a triumph — by my count I’ve used at least 4 different mediums/writing softwares to create this writing, starting with a short story I wrote on Onepageperday.com

I edited some of the writing and structure in this first version. Also found an amazing resource for complementary images! I’m using library scans from 1800s picture books. Most of the ones I’m using so far are from a collection of the writings of Chaucer, which is an inspiration in that I’m attempting to create a frame story structure somewhat (which suits the Series format extremely well!) The images are religious in tone and match the archetype I’m going for with each character. Here’s my title image (I have a thing for skulls):

OK Notes:

I will use a three-act structure. Probably:

ACT I: Before Easter 2000 AD (including Palm Sunday)

ACT II: Easter Week 2000 AD: Sunday April 23

ACT III: After Easter 2000 AD (when the Faithful are revealed)

EPILOGUE: Halloween 2000 AD

(note for later: Easter 2000 could also be an epic sci-fi comedy title)

Next Scenes / Rough Act 1 Breakdown:

>THE VIA DOLEROSA (Act 1 Sunday preview) — Luke and Door Man, watching The New Jesus. After Pastor Frank

>JT (Sunday night youth group sermon, comes home late and we meet Sarah)

>ABIGAIL (alone in bathroom)

JESSICA’S CONFESSION (JT’s office, Monday morning of Act 1)

FRANK’S OFFICE — the plan to find the truth

THE WISE WOMEN — Laura, Cindy, and Linda. Setting chapter, describing the town of Crystal Springs in Spring as they take Rosemarry to the hospital for a blood test.

THE CONFRONTATION — At Cracker Barrel, with Rosemarry, Frank, JT, Sarah, and Jessica. The pastors confront Rosemarry with the truth,

THE REVELATION — (Wednesday night special service. Final rehearsal for the Play. The Miracle is Revealed and the Spirit Moves Within the People. Frank and JT’s dilemma.

THE OTHER REVELATION —Abi admits the truth to Zak, who cannot accept it. He prays “over her” and in the prayer asks for forgiveness on her behalf. Romeo and Juiliet inverse? Leviticus 19:29 ‘Do not profane your daughter by making her a harlot, so that the land will not fall to harlotry and the land become full of lewdness.

Whew! That took a while to type out, but I’ve been meaning to do it for a while, just to get it out of my head. So there’s the whole book on a page. I have a long way to go but feel good about the journey ahead. My next goals are to sync the JT section I’ve already written and write the whipping scene Luke witnesses. But I’ll keep this side of my account updated as I add to the serial, and maybe gain an audience for feedback? Help me stay motivated, Medium.

One clap, two clap, three clap, forty?

By clapping more or less, you can signal to us which stories really stand out.
