My First Steps as a Community Manager
How I got involved with working in the whole “Community Management” scene.
I started my first steps of Community Management back in 2008 in a small, fan made, text-based RPG game based around the Halo franchise.
I wasn’t a “founding member” of the staff, but instead came out of the community as an active member and leader within the community. One day I saw they were looking for someone to help out with writing news posts, moderating the chat and interacting with the players, so I applied.
Almost immediately after my application, I was asked to jump onto a chat with the team and talk about the position. About twenty minutes later, I had a green username in the game and was their Community Manager.
I worked with that Halo RPG game for over a year, until one day the developers moved onto a new project and the game slowly died out.
As I look back, if I never liked Halo, hoarded my parent’s computer to play games online, or even found that game, I might not be at where I was today.
That simple little web game gave me my first glance at Community Management, and propelled me down the line to a career I enjoy greatly.
