Fair ‘nuff.
The puzzle mechanics and the dynamic A.I. were examples more anything else — like I said, it was about needing some contrast with all the shooting and making things explode. An element to make it feel a bit more nuanced and less one-note. I’m not exactly sure what element that might be, which is why I brought up Portal and F.E.A.R. as comparisons given they’re first-person games I enjoy, but it was needed and lacking it essentially ruined the experience for me.
It’s one of the reasons I bring up Aliens and Avatar. They’re both essentially action cinema (they’re even directed by the same person) but the latter is relies heavily on its special effects to carry it entirely while negating everything else to the point it was just empty, the earlier has actual heart and personality in its execution to go along with all the special effects and why it’s ultimately a better movie.
I hope that makes some sense…
